Originally called the "Wheel of the Devil," the zoetrope is a moving image machine that was invented in the 1830s. In the 1860s, it was manufactured and marketed to the public. It was then that it was given the name zoetrope. The term zoetrope is from the Greek words zoe, "life" and trope, "turn". Zoetropes were extremely popular forms of entertainment for both children and adults in the Victorian era.
A zoetrope is a cylinder with vertical slits cut into the sides. A band of pictures fits inside. As the cylinder is spun, the images appear to move when viewed through the slits. Like the the flipbook, the zoetrope also works on the principle of persistence of vision.
The band of pictures that fits insidethe cylinder is called a zoetrope strip. It consists of a series of images, each of which is slightly different from the one before it."
All the zoetrope strips are made by Elton. The images are from old books, anolog filmtapes and photo's. He makes a digital filmstrip with Photoshop and prints it. Sometimes he starts with a soundfile, sometimes it comes together automatically.
Elton Eerkens ( 1972, Oosterhout, The Netherlands) I make use of film, photography and recently also animation and installations. My work often starts of small, with an idea or an experiment. My films are, mostly, a concentrated observation of ordinary everyday situations. I've filmed people from my window who, according to me, did something particularly noticeable. They somehow touched me, it was almost as if they tried to make themselves noticeable for me...that's the feeling I got and these are the films of those experiences. A man stands beside his car, you can see his panic increasing slowly. I think: this captivating, or strange? I should hold onto this. I film with a stylistic simplicity, often from just one camera point of view, and give my subjects all the space they need. Through the discovery of a little map with passport pictures I got engaged into the reinterpretation of old footage and images. I was fascinated by the more profound layers that commenced through the process of transformation of images and sound material after intense and extensive usages. The distortions, displacements and blurrages that arise provide me with new insights. I have come to look upon these materials as tangible and fictile which I can influence through self developed techniques. This inspired me to proceed with the manual manipulation of original images. By scraping, colouring, cutting and rearranging the original images, an animation is created. I am in search of the conditions, limitations and relativity of the original material. New images with several meaning layers arise, in which the vulnerability and instability of the original material become visible. In the beginning of 2008 I made the conscious decision to deviate from the use of film and photography in the traditional manner. This in an attempt to recreate and control the creative process as a visual artist. I want to descend from the notion of film and photography as a definite and final end and aim to work towards a cinematic production that changes during a short presentation and that is a combination between installation and performance. This in an attempt to amplify the astonishment of the spectator by creating a composition or setting that leaves behind an image that balances on the edge of recognition and alienation.
